South Division Day

Dear Guides,

the annual South Division Day will be held on Saturday, 24 September 2011, from about 8am to 1pm. Tell your phone relay leader if you are not able to make it for the South Division Day and the reason by 5th September. For those who will be able to make it, below are the activities you can participate in. Please tag in the tagbox to tell me which activity you are interested to participate in by 5th September.

ACTIVITY 1 : SEWER EXTRAORDINAIRE

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS – 2 PER UNIT

A Picture paints a thousand words (Guides)

Rules and Regulations (Guides)

1) Time Limit: 30 minutes

2) Participants will be given pieces of cloth which they have to sew together with interesting stitches, design and layout or concept based on the theme of empowering women or what encompasses a modern woman.

3) Participants may bring their own buttons, thread, needles, scissors, ribbons and cloth for the competition.

4) Judging is based on creativity (50%), neatness of stitches (30%) and speed of competition (20%)

ACTIVITY 2 : STEADY HANDS EXTRAORDINAIRE (GUIDES)

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS – 4 PER UNIT

Rules and Regulations (Guides)

1) Time Limit: 15 minutes

2) Attire: Guides’ T-shirts and shorts / track pants

3) Participants are given a stack of poker cards which they have to stack up.

4) Judging is based on height (40%), number of levels / storeys (40%) and speed of competition (20%)

ACTIVITY 3: SUPER QUILT-MAKER

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS – 3 PER UNIT

Rules and Regulations

1) Pieces of cloth would be given to groups of 3 to mend.

2) The group will use the pieces of cloth to form a mini quilt (size of 2 handkerchiefs).

3) Judging is based on creativity (50%) and handiwork (50%)

ACTIVITY 4: MEMORY EXTRAORDINAIRE

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS – 3 PER UNIT

Rules and Regulations

1) Guides play in teams of 3..

2) ONE Guide will be given a “to-do list” to remember within a time frame.

3) She must then share this list with her teammates, and they decide who does what.

4) The fastest and most accurate group wins.

ACTIVITY 5: TELEMATCH

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS – 8 PER TEAM

Teams of 8 will compete against one another in a series of fun activities.

Games include:

Maximum number of teams for this activity: 6

It will be on a first-come-first-serve basis

ACTIVITY 6: THE HANDICAP CHALLENGE

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS: 5 PER TEAM

Guides will be made to fill the shoes of the less fortunate members of our society through this activity.

Teams of 5 will play roles of different impairments (visually, physically etc) and complete a series of given tasks within the time limit (15 minutes).

Tasks include:

This activity aims to highlight Guide Law #7: A Guide has courage and is cheerful in all difficulties, and also to allow Guides to feel for themselves the inconveniences felt by the impaired members of our society.

ACTIVITY 7: SUPER CHEF

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS: 4 PER TEAM

The competition will be divided into two sections:

1) The “Challenge”

Guides are given 30 minutes to create and cook a dish relevant to the theme “Empowering women”. The guides can cook with the ingredients given to them, as long as the theme is relevant in the dish. Once the dishes are cooked, they are all presented to the judges for tasting – presentation, taste and the prevalence of the theme ingredient is considered.

2) Pressure test

The guides are given a dish that they then must create in 45 min. Once the guides have finished cooking, the dishes are taken to the judges to be tasted and criticized.

Total time needed: 1 h 15 min

Judging criteria: Overall appeal (20%), Appearance and Presentation (20%), Execution of recipe (20%), Taste (20%) and Relevance to theme (20%)

ACTIVITY 9 : DANCE TO THE BEAT

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS: 2 TO 5 PER UNIT

Brief:

So you think you can dance? Come take up the challenge and showcase your beautiful and creative moves by dancing to the beat of a mixture of songs!

Judging Criteria:

1. Creativity – 30%

2. Choreography/Synchronisation and Rhythm of Dance – 30%

3. Showmanship and Teamwork – 10%

4. Level of Difficulty – 10%

5. Incorporation of guiding knowledge – 10%

6. Audience Impact – 10%

Format of Competition:

- Teams will be given a maximum of 1½ hour to prepare for the dance item and winning entries will perform prior to the prize presentation ceremony. All teams will prepare for the dance at the hall.

- Music will be provided by the organiser on the day of the competition.

- Teams are highly encouraged to bring along costumes and suitable props.

- The music will be about 3-4 minutes long and is a mixture of popular tunes.
