training on 14th August

Dear Guides,

There will be training on the 14th August 2011, Wednesday. Fall in outside Guides room at 3.30 pm sharp in your pt kit. Bring must haves.Sec 1s, bring along your half guides uniform and your boots. For this training, you are expected to finish up one badgework and one testwork.

Below are some suggestions for your badgework:

Craft:

1. Do three of the following clauses:
1.1 Embroider an original design;
1.2 Print a piece of material using lino-block, potato-cut, or screen or by tie-dying;
1.3 Make a puppet;
1.4 Whittle an object from natural food;
1.5 Model a figure, or an animal or bird, in lay, plasticine or wax;
1.6 Make a carving in a medium, soft enough to cut easily e.g. remnant cloth, twine;
1.7 Make a pot;
1.8 Make a basket;
1.9 Make a picture using metal relief e.g. copper, aluminium;
1.10 Weave a rug or piece of material of a suitable size for some other article;
1.11 Make a decorative floor covering in a suitable material e.g. remnant cloth, twine;
1.12 Make a mosaic;
1.13 Make an article using macramé;
1.14 Make an article using a craft other than one of those listed above.

In addition bring to the test one unfinished article other than the craft that she has made, on which she can demonstrate the ability to the tester.
Note: Only one article made in school within that last 12 months maybe submitted at the test.

Entertainer

1. Perform two items, each to last at least two minutes, from the following: dancing, singing, playing an instrument, reciting.
Note: The items may be of the same kind, e.g. two contrasted songs. The standard is to be very high and suitable for a public entertainment.

2. Entertain Guides for ten minutes with at least two of the following
(other than items performed in clause 1):-
Conjuring tricks; playing whistle , banjo, harmonica, harp and any other portable instrument; character sketches; stories; songs and chorus; mime.
Note: The standard need not be high as in clause 1, but suitable for a campfire.

Friends to animals

1. Own, or part own, an animal or bird.

2. Have a general knowledge of how to feed the animals and keep it healthy.

3. Know how to obtain advice on sick animals from a veterinary surgeon or other authority, e.g. S.P.C.A.; be able to carry out the treatment as instructed.

4. Know how to give medicine to an animal.

5. Understand how it is possible to be cruel to an animal by:
5.1 Over feeding
5.2 Lack of discipline in training
5.3 Unsuitable living conditions, e.g. kennel, cage etc
5.4 Insufficient care in grooming etc.

Have a thorough knowledge of the natural history of two domestic animals, other than the animals which belongs to her and describe their habits and usefulness

Thrift

1. Having a savings account of at least 3 months’ standing and show that she has added to it regularly from her savings or pocket money.

2. Bring a certificate from her parents stating that she is not wasteful in the home and is keeping her belongings in good condition.

3. Bring to the test an article that proves that she is thrifty. E.g. repairing toys or equivalent.

Answer questions on the real meaning of thrift and keep a notebook over a period of at least a month of ways in which she is able to put thrift into
practice

Toymaker

1. Make a toy of her choice.

2. Pass two of the following:

2.1 Make two different animals of some soft material, or one material of one animal and one rag doll, the face to be painted or embroidered. Cut-out patterns may be used.
2.2 Make two different vehicles with movable wheels from wood, cork or other material.
2.3 Make a wool ball on card frame and a bird or beast with scraps of coloured wool, suitable for a tiny baby.
2.4 Dress a doll, the clothes to be removable and similar to those of a baby or toddler. The doll may be that submitted in clause (2.1).
2.5 Make a room of doll’s house from a box; paint, paper and furnish it completely, using oddments and scraps.
2.6 Make a scrapbook to include one page of original illustrations or an original story, e.g. a fairy story, nature story, heroic story.
2.7 Make a model farmyard or doll’s house.

Wearing the Guides Uniform

How to wear your uniform:

Sew your patrol emblem four fingers away and align with the first button on the left side of your uniform. Like this:
Instructions to tie the scarf:

Using the method of tying a reef/square knot.

Step 1: Fold scarf a third of the way. Continue to fold/roll long edge over.



Step 2: Place long edge around neck and tie reef knot.



Step 3: Adjust scarf so that it is neat and tidy on both the front and back


If you are still not sure, we can help you to tie tmr,

Pin your world badge four fingers away from the first button, align. Pin it on the right side of your uniform. Your world badge looks like this:
This is how you should wear your belt, whistle on the right, the small thing on the left.
Season your beret like this:

Put your uniform in your hanger and dustcover. Remember to pin your world badge! put ur boots in a shoe bag.
You are expected to memorize the Guides Promise:
