Fall in outside Guides room at 2.30pm sharp this friday for your training in your half guides uniform / half school uniform for the sec 1s. Bring along scissors, glue , colour makers and colour papers . Bring along your dust cover and white shoes too, There is no need for you to fall in in the morning.

Dear Guides
there will be thinking day this

Transport will not be provided, thus we will all meet at Somerset MRT control station at
8.30 am in your
full guides uniform.
You may bring along packed
sandwiches, Ponchos/raincoats , water bottle and money if you wish to purchase items at the white elephant sale.
There will be craft workshops during the thinking day competition , and if you wish to participate, you may also bring along a small pair of scissors

Dear Guides,
There will be no training on 20 Jan due to the learning festival. We will be having a training for scrapbook making which is one of the competition for World Thinking Day.
SCRAPBOOK
PAGE DESIGN A creative work of putting together a scrapbook page which captures the WTD theme, “Together We Can
Save Our Planet”. The dimension of the scrapbook page is 30cm by 30cm.
We will be making our scrapbook at the I-room, first level, near the conference room. Gather outside guides room at 3.15pm after your lunch on monday, 16 Jan. Bring along colouring materials such as colour paper etc, scissors, glue, Sewing kit ( thread, needle, cloths) , Ribbons, Lace etc to decorate the scrapbook. For those who cant make it for this training, please kindly tag in the tagboard and your reason for not attending. This training will end around 6pm.
As there will be no training on 27 Jan, Friday, the training will be push forward to Thursday, 26 Jan. Those who cant make it for the 26 jan training, or need to leave early, Tag in the tagboard too.

As there is limited space in Scape, only a maximum of 20 guides can go for this World Thinking Day Celebration. No transport will be provided as there is no drop off point. The theme for this years world thinking day is " We can save our planet". There will be several competitions related to this theme.
1) PRINTING / PAINTING ON REUSABLE ITEM COMPETITION
1 A creative work of printing or painting on a reusable item (use either one of the following: shoes, T-shirt or cloth bag). The work should capture the WTD theme, “Together We Can Save Our Planet”.
Those Guides that are involve in this competition:
A creative work made up of recycled materials and is wearable as a piece of dress. The work should capture the WTD theme, “Together We Can Save Our Planet”.
Those Guides that are involve in this competition:
A creative work performed using everyday objects as percussions (the object should exclude drums and other percussion musical instruments). The work should capture the WTD theme, “Together We Can Save Our Planet”. Duration of the performance should be between 3 and 5 minutes. The performance should be in a video form and it must be in WMV format.
Those Guides that are involve in this competition:
THE DATE LINE FOR ALL ENTRIES TO BE SUBMITTED TO GUIDES HQ IS 20 JANUARY, FRIDAY, 1700 HOURS.
The materials for the competition must be RECYCLED materials, no buying of new materials and we will not provide any materials for you.

Dear Guides,
you are expected to finish up
3 badge work by the end of this year during your December holidays and bring it on the next training.
Below are some of the suggestions you could do for your badge work:
Craft:
1. Do three of the following clauses:
1.1 Embroider an original design;
1.2 Print a piece of material using lino-block, potato-cut, or screen or by tie-dying;
1.3 Make a puppet;
1.4 Whittle an object from natural food;
1.5 Model a figure, or an animal or bird, in lay, plasticine or wax;
1.6 Make a carving in a medium, soft enough to cut easily e.g. remnant cloth, twine;
1.7 Make a pot;
1.8 Make a basket;
1.9 Make a picture using metal relief e.g. copper, aluminium;
1.10 Weave a rug or piece of material of a suitable size for some other article;
1.11 Make a decorative floor covering in a suitable material e.g. remnant cloth, twine;
1.12 Make a mosaic;
1.13 Make an article using macramé;
1.14 Make an article using a craft other than one of those listed above.
In addition bring to the test one unfinished article other than the craft that she has made, on which she can demonstrate the ability to the tester. Note: Only one article made in school within that last 12 months maybe submitted at the test.
Friends to animals:
1. Own, or part own, an animal or bird.
2. Have a general knowledge of how to feed the animals and keep it healthy.
3. Know how to obtain advice on sick animals from a veterinary surgeon or other authority, e.g. S.P.C.A.; be able to carry out the treatment as instructed.
4. Know how to give medicine to an animal.
5. Understand how it is possible to be cruel to an animal by:
5.1 Over feeding
5.2 Lack of discipline in training
5.3 Unsuitable living conditions, e.g. kennel, cage etc
5.4 Insufficient care in grooming etc.
Have a thorough knowledge of the natural history of two domestic animals, other than the animals which belongs to her and describe their habits and usefulness
Thrift:
1. Having a savings account of at least 3 months’ standing and show that she has added to it regularly from her savings or pocket money.
2. Bring a certificate from her parents stating that she is not wasteful in the home and is keeping her belongings in good condition.
3. Bring to the test an article that proves that she is thrifty. E.g. repairing toys or equivalent.
Answer questions on the real meaning of thrift and keep a notebook over a period of at least a month of ways in which she is able to put thrift into practice
Toymaker:
1. Make a toy of her choice.
2. Pass two of the following:
2.1 Make two different animals of some soft material, or one material of one animal and one rag doll, the face to be painted or embroidered. Cut-out patterns may be used.
2.2 Make two different vehicles with movable wheels from wood, cork or other material.
2.3 Make a wool ball on card frame and a bird or beast with scraps of coloured wool, suitable for a tiny baby.
2.4 Dress a doll, the clothes to be removable and similar to those of a baby or toddler. The doll may be that submitted in clause (2.1).
2.5 Make a room of doll’s house from a box; paint, paper and furnish it completely, using oddments and scraps.
2.6 Make a scrapbook to include one page of original illustrations or an original story, e.g. a fairy story, nature story, heroic story.
2.7 Make a model farmyard or doll’s house.
Accident prevention:
1. Know and where possible, demonstrate how to guard against accidents and when using: gas electrical appliances, kerosene stoves, naked lights, open fires.
2. Know what special precautions to take in the house with:
2.1 Small children
2.2 Old people
3. Know at least three different ways of preventing accidents:
3.1 When boating and bathing;
3.2 When using public transport, cars and cycles;
3.3 When with animals;
3.4 In high-rise buildings.
4. Know what special precautions to take outdoors with regard to barbed wire, poisonous plants, storms and other hazards, e.g. Hornets, jelly-fish etc.
5. Be prepared to put your knowledge to the test in a given situation.
Aquarist:
1. Own, or part-own, an aquarium of not less than three fishes. Be responsible for the care of the fishes, including feeding and cleaning, for at least six months or the Guide may take care of an aquarium in her School (if she does not own one herself). She should bring a letter from her teacher-in-charge to show that she has taken care of the aquarium for 6 months.
2. Know the general requirements for setting up an aquarium so as to maintain a balance.
3. Recognise four common varieties of cold water or twelve varieties of tropical fishes.
4. Identify the external visible features of fishes.
5. Choose four of the following aquarium appliances and show that she understands their uses: feeding rings; thermometers; filters; heaters; syphons; aerators; thermostats.
Note: The tester is to inspect the aquarium more than once in order to see that it is correctly maintained by the candidate.
Basket-Maker:
1. Make two of the following, each in a different type of basket-work, such as cane, raffia, straw, the base of one article to be woven.
1.1 Market basket;
1.2 Mat;
1.3 Work basket;
1.4 Waste-paper basket.
2. Have a general knowledge of the raw material employed, how it is obtained, and how it is prepared for working.
Collector:
1. Show a collection, made over a period of at least six months, of one of the following: stamps, postcards, postmarks, crest or equivalent; the material is to be drawn from many sources as possible.
Discuss with the tester:1.1 Why she finds this hobby interesting;
1.2 What she has learnt from it;
1.3 How she can develop her interest.
Pass three of the following clauses:2.1 Make a scrap-book for a children’s hospital;
2.2 Make a book of pictures, cutting etc; to illustrate World Guiding
(i.e. within and/or outside the Commonwealth);
2.3 (i) Make at least twelve leaf prints; name and mount them; or
- (ii) Make twelve coloured plaster casts of leaves or twigs; or
- (iii) Mount and label a collection of twigs and fruits of at least eight trees, to give to a Company or Pack.
2.4 Make a collection of at least ten objects which would be of interest to a foreign Company or Pack, and descriptive catalogue to accompany it. Pack in a box small enough to be sent aboard by letter post;
2.5 Collect and mount illustrations of six birds that the candidate has seen, together with information concerning each to include:
- (i) A description of the bird; a particular characteristics; where it is likely to be found; and what it feeds on.
- (ii) Its nest and eggs.
Present the collection to the Company library.
2.6 Make a collection of eighteen wild flowers with their leaves; press, mount and name them. Present them alone or another company.
2.7 Take a set of 15 photographs on a subject of her choice.
Note: The collection is to judge on neatness and method in arrangement and on the interest shown in it by the candidate.
Dental Health:
1. Know the structure and function of teeth.
2. Make a model or chart of a tooth with whatever materials that can be used.
3. Know the various oral hygiene aids and their correct use.
4. Know the importance of good nutrition for good dental health.
5. Name 6 foods which contain free sugars and how they affect dental health.
6. Demonstrate how a younger child can be taught to practice good oral hygiene.
Project: Do a dental health project e.g. scrapbook, essay, poster, class talk at school, Company, Pack etc.
Health:
1. Keep the Guide Health Record Card for the two months immediately prior to the test to show the efforts she is making to maintain good health habits. Discuss these with the tester.
2. Show by her personal appearance at the test that she is genuinely interested in good health and grooming; answer questions on cleanliness of clothing and toilet articles, and the use and abuse of cosmetics and deodorants.
3. Understand the dangers of ill-fitting and unsuitable footwear. Bring to the test two pairs of her own shoes that she considers suitable for different occasions, e.g. school, job, camping, parties etc.
4. Discuss with the tester how health is affected by cleanliness, smoking, food, drink, unwise dieting, deportment, exercise, late nights.
Discuss with the tester how she spends her leisure time to show that she is trying to maintain a balance in her various activities, interests and work.
Local History:
1. Visit a building or area of interest and give an account of her discoveries.
2. Know a story of the vicinity in the past, or describe the area at one period in the past.
3. Choose one of the following and discover something about it; a local legend, custom or craft; or discover the origin of six local place names.
Know something of the lives of three people who have played an interesting role in the history of Singapore
Writer:
1. Write an original story of one thousand to two thousand words.
2. Write one of the following:
2.1 A dramatic sketch taking at least 10 min to perform;
2.2 A short poem in recognized verse form.
2.3 An article or campfire yarn of not less than two hundred words;
2.4 An essay on her favourite hero or heroine.
3. At the test, write:
3.1 A letter of at least two hundred words describing an incident she has enjoyed.
3.2 An exercise in punctuation given by the tester.
Note: The work submitted under clause 1 and 2 is to be sent to the tester beforehand; it should be neatly written or typed.

South Division Day will be held on S

ACTIVITY 1 : SEWER EXTRAORDINAIRE NO. OF PARTICIPANTS – 2 PER UNIT
A Picture paints a thousand words (Guides)
Rules and Regulations (Guides)
1) Time Limit: 30 minutes
2) Participants will be given pieces of cloth which they have to sew together with interesting stitches, design and layout or concept based on the theme of empowering women or what encompasses a modern woman.
3) Participants may bring their own buttons, thread, needles, scissors, ribbons and cloth for the competition.
4) Judging is based on creativity (50%), neatness of stitches (30%) and speed of competition (20%)
ACTIVITY 2 : STEADY HANDS EXTRAORDINAIRE (GUIDES) NO. OF PARTICIPANTS – 4 PER UNIT
Rules and Regulations (Guides)
1) Time Limit: 15 minutes
2) Attire: Guides’ T-shirts and shorts / track pants
3) Participants are given a stack of poker cards which they have to stack up.
4) Judging is based on height (40%), number of levels / storeys (40%) and speed of competition (20%)
ACTIVITY 3: SUPER QUILT-MAKER
NO. OF PARTICIPANTS – 3 PER UNIT
Rules and Regulations
1) Pieces of cloth would be given to groups of 3 to mend.
2) The group will use the pieces of cloth to form a mini quilt (size of 2 handkerchiefs).
3) Judging is based on creativity (50%) and handiwork (50%)
ACTIVITY 4: MEMORY EXTRAORDINAIRE NO. OF PARTICIPANTS – 3 PER UNIT
Rules and Regulations
1) Guides play in teams of 3..
2) ONE Guide will be given a “to-do list” to remember within a time frame.
3) She must then share this list with her teammates, and they decide who does what.
4) The fastest and most accurate group wins.
ACTIVITY 5: TELEMATCH NO. OF PARTICIPANTS – 8 PER TEAM
Teams of 8 will compete against one another in a series of fun activities.
Games include:
- “Seven legged worm” (team joins their feet together and walk a certain distance)
- “Tug-of-War” (with a slight twist: as teams pull, they will also attempt to pick up “items” on the floor that will help gain more points, think “Super Mario”)
- Drunken sailor, and piñata (team sends a representative and performs “drunken sailor” and thereafter, all “drunken sailors” will move ahead to hit common piñata. Other team members are to pick up “items” at the very first instant when the piñata is broken.)
Maximum number of teams for this activity: 6
It will be on a first-come-first-serve basis
ACTIVITY 6: THE HANDICAP CHALLENGE
NO. OF PARTICIPANTS: 5 PER TEAM
Guides will be made to fill the shoes of the less fortunate members of our society through this activity.
Teams of 5 will play roles of different impairments (visually, physically etc) and complete a series of given tasks within the time limit (15 minutes).
Tasks include:
- Tying of knots while blindfolded,
- passing a message (from a visual impaired to a hearing/speech impaired) etc.
- feeding (food/ water)
- cleaning up a messy room etc.
This activity aims to highlight Guide Law #7: A Guide has courage and is cheerful in all difficulties, and also to allow Guides to feel for themselves the inconveniences felt by the impaired members of our society.
ACTIVITY 7: SUPER CHEF
NO. OF PARTICIPANTS: 4 PER TEAM
The competition will be divided into two sections:
1) The “Challenge”
Guides are given 30 minutes to create and cook a dish relevant to the theme “Empowering women”. The guides can cook with the ingredients given to them, as long as the theme is relevant in the dish. Once the dishes are cooked, they are all presented to the judges for tasting – presentation, taste and the prevalence of the theme ingredient is considered.
2) Pressure test
The guides are given a dish that they then must create in 45 min. Once the guides have finished cooking, the dishes are taken to the judges to be tasted and criticized.
Total time needed: 1 h 15 min
Judging criteria: Overall appeal (20%), Appearance and Presentation (20%), Execution of recipe (20%), Taste (20%) and Relevance to theme (20%)
ACTIVITY 9 : DANCE TO THE BEAT
NO. OF PARTICIPANTS: 2 TO 5 PER UNIT
Brief:
So you think you can dance? Come take up the challenge and showcase your beautiful and creative moves by dancing to the beat of a mixture of songs!
Judging Criteria:
1. Creativity – 30%
2. Choreography/Synchronisation and Rhythm of Dance – 30%
3. Showmanship and Teamwork – 10%
4. Level of Difficulty – 10%
5. Incorporation of guiding knowledge – 10%
6. Audience Impact – 10%
Format of Competition:
- Teams will be given a maximum of 1½ hour to prepare for the dance item and winning entries will perform prior to the prize presentation ceremony. All teams will prepare for the dance at the hall.
- Music will be provided by the organiser on the day of the competition.
- Teams are highly encouraged to bring along costumes and suitable props.
- The music will be about 3-4 minutes long and is a mixture of popular tunes.
