Making of Scrapbook

Dear Guides,
There will be no training on 20 Jan due to the learning festival. We will be having a training for scrapbook making which is one of the competition for World Thinking Day.

SCRAPBOOKPAGE DESIGN A creative work of putting together a scrapbook page which captures the WTD theme, “Together We CanSave Our Planet”. The dimension of the scrapbook page is 30cm by 30cm.

We will be making our scrapbook at the I-room, first level, near the conference room. Gather outside guides room at 3.15pm after your lunch on monday, 16 Jan. Bring along colouring materials such as colour paper etc, scissors, glue, Sewing kit ( thread, needle, cloths) , Ribbons, Lace etc to decorate the scrapbook. For those who cant make it for this training, please kindly tag in the tagboard and your reason for not attending. This training will end around 6pm.

As there will be no training on 27 Jan, Friday, the training will be push forward to Thursday, 26 Jan. Those who cant make it for the 26 jan training, or need to leave early, Tag in the tagboard too.

Things that require your reply in the tagboard:
-If you cant make it on 18 Feb for the World thinking day Celebration at Scape ( state your reason for not attending) ( kindly give your reply by 22 jan, Sunday)

World Thinking Day

as all of you have know, Girl Guides World Thinking Day is coming. This year's world thinking day celebration will take place at Scape, 2 Orchard Link.

The details are as follow:

As there is limited space in Scape, only a maximum of 20 guides can go for this World Thinking Day Celebration. No transport will be provided as there is no drop off point. The performance should be in a video form and it must be in WMV format.

Suggestions for badges to be completed

Dear Guides,

you are expected to finish up 3 badge work by the end of this year during your December holidays and bring it on the next training.
Below are some of the suggestions you could do for your badge work:

Craft:

1. Do three of the following clauses:
1.1 Embroider an original design;
1.2 Print a piece of material using lino-block, potato-cut, or screen or by tie-dying;
1.3 Make a puppet;
1.4 Whittle an object from natural food;
1.5 Model a figure, or an animal or bird, in lay, plasticine or wax;
1.6 Make a carving in a medium, soft enough to cut easily e.g. remnant cloth, twine;
1.7 Make a pot;
1.8 Make a basket;
1.9 Make a picture using metal relief e.g. copper, aluminium;
1.10 Weave a rug or piece of material of a suitable size for some other article;
1.11 Make a decorative floor covering in a suitable material e.g. remnant cloth, twine;
1.12 Make a mosaic;
1.13 Make an article using macramé;
1.14 Make an article using a craft other than one of those listed above.

In addition bring to the test one unfinished article other than the craft that she has made, on which she can demonstrate the ability to the tester. Note: Only one article made in school within that last 12 months maybe submitted at the test.

Friends to animals:

1. Own, or part own, an animal or bird.

2. Have a general knowledge of how to feed the animals and keep it healthy.

3. Know how to obtain advice on sick animals from a veterinary surgeon or other authority, e.g. S.P.C.A.; be able to carry out the treatment as instructed.

4. Know how to give medicine to an animal.

5. Understand how it is possible to be cruel to an animal by:
5.1 Over feeding
5.2 Lack of discipline in training
5.3 Unsuitable living conditions, e.g. kennel, cage etc
5.4 Insufficient care in grooming etc.

Have a thorough knowledge of the natural history of two domestic animals, other than the animals which belongs to her and describe their habits and usefulness

Thrift:

1. Having a savings account of at least 3 months’ standing and show that she has added to it regularly from her savings or pocket money.

2. Bring a certificate from her parents stating that she is not wasteful in the home and is keeping her belongings in good condition.

3. Bring to the test an article that proves that she is thrifty. E.g. repairing toys or equivalent.

Answer questions on the real meaning of thrift and keep a notebook over a period of at least a month of ways in which she is able to put thrift into practice

Toymaker:

1. Make a toy of her choice.

2. Pass two of the following:

2.1 Make two different animals of some soft material, or one material of one animal and one rag doll, the face to be painted or embroidered. Cut-out patterns may be used.
2.2 Make two different vehicles with movable wheels from wood, cork or other material.
2.3 Make a wool ball on card frame and a bird or beast with scraps of coloured wool, suitable for a tiny baby.
2.4 Dress a doll, the clothes to be removable and similar to those of a baby or toddler. The doll may be that submitted in clause (2.1).
2.5 Make a room of doll’s house from a box; paint, paper and furnish it completely, using oddments and scraps.
2.6 Make a scrapbook to include one page of original illustrations or an original story, e.g. a fairy story, nature story, heroic story.

2.7 Make a model farmyard or doll’s house.

Accident prevention:

1. Know and where possible, demonstrate how to guard against accidents and when using: gas electrical appliances, kerosene stoves, naked lights, open fires.

2.    Know what special precautions to take in the house with:
2.1          Small children
2.2          Old people

3.    Know at least three different ways of preventing accidents:
3.1          When boating and bathing;
3.2          When using public transport, cars and cycles;
3.3          When with animals;
3.4          In high-rise buildings.

4. Know what special precautions to take outdoors with regard to barbed wire, poisonous plants, storms and other hazards, e.g. Hornets, jelly-fish etc.

5. Be prepared to put your knowledge to the test in a given situation.

Aquarist:

1. Own, or part-own, an aquarium of not less than three fishes. Be responsible for the care of the fishes, including feeding and cleaning, for at least six months or the Guide may take care of an aquarium in her School (if she does not own one herself). She should bring a letter from her teacher-in-charge to show that she has taken care of the aquarium for 6 months.

2. Know the general requirements for setting up an aquarium so as to maintain a balance.

3. Recognise four common varieties of cold water or twelve varieties of tropical fishes.

4. Identify the external visible features of fishes.

5. Choose four of the following aquarium appliances and show that she understands their uses: feeding rings; thermometers; filters; heaters; syphons; aerators; thermostats.

Note: The tester is to inspect the aquarium more than once in order to see that it is correctly maintained by the candidate.

Basket-Maker:

1.    Make two of the following, each in a different type of basket-work, such as cane, raffia, straw, the base of one article to be woven.
1.1          Market basket;
1.2          Mat;
1.3          Work basket;
1.4          Waste-paper basket.

2. Have a general knowledge of the raw material employed, how it is obtained, and how it is prepared for working.

Collector:

1.     Show a collection, made over a period of at least six months, of one of the following: stamps, postcards, postmarks, crest or equivalent; the material is to be drawn from many sources as possible.
Discuss with the tester:1.1             Why she finds this hobby interesting;
1.2             What she has learnt from it;
1.3             How she can develop her interest.

Pass three of the following clauses:2.1 Make a scrap-book for a children’s hospital;
2.2        Make a book of pictures, cutting etc; to illustrate World Guiding
(i.e. within and/or outside the Commonwealth);
2.3       (i)         Make at least twelve leaf prints; name and mount them; or
-           (ii)        Make twelve coloured plaster casts of leaves or twigs; or
-           (iii)       Mount and label a collection of twigs and fruits of at least eight trees, to give to a Company or Pack.
2.4                   Make a collection of at least ten objects which would be of interest to a foreign Company or Pack, and descriptive catalogue to accompany it. Pack in a box small enough to be sent aboard by letter post;
2.5                   Collect and mount illustrations of six birds that the candidate has seen, together with information concerning each to include:
- (i)      A description of the bird; a particular characteristics; where it is likely to be found; and what it feeds on.
- (ii) Its nest and eggs.
Present the collection to the Company library.

2.6                   Make a collection of eighteen wild flowers with their leaves; press, mount and name them. Present them alone or another company.
2.7                   Take a set of 15 photographs on a subject of her choice.
Note:    The collection is to judge on neatness and method in arrangement and on the interest shown in it by the candidate.

Dental Health:

1. Know the structure and function of teeth.

2. Make a model or chart of a tooth with whatever materials that can be used.

3. Know the various oral hygiene aids and their correct use.

4. Know the importance of good nutrition for good dental health.

5. Name 6 foods which contain free sugars and how they affect dental health.

6. Demonstrate how a younger child can be taught to practice good oral hygiene.

Project: Do a dental health project e.g. scrapbook, essay, poster, class talk at school, Company, Pack etc.

Health:

1. Keep the Guide Health Record Card for the two months immediately prior to the test to show the efforts she is making to maintain good health habits. Discuss these with the tester.

2. Show by her personal appearance at the test that she is genuinely interested in good health and grooming; answer questions on cleanliness of clothing and toilet articles, and the use and abuse of cosmetics and deodorants.

3. Understand the dangers of ill-fitting and unsuitable footwear. Bring to the test two pairs of her own shoes that she considers suitable for different occasions, e.g. school, job, camping, parties etc.

4. Discuss with the tester how health is affected by cleanliness, smoking, food, drink, unwise dieting, deportment, exercise, late nights.

Discuss with the tester how she spends her leisure time to show that she is trying to maintain a balance in her various activities, interests and work.

Local History:

1. Visit a building or area of interest and give an account of her discoveries.

2. Know a story of the vicinity in the past, or describe the area at one period in the past.

3. Choose one of the following and discover something about it; a local legend, custom or craft; or discover the origin of six local place names.

Know something of the lives of three people who have played an interesting role in the history of Singapore

Writer:

1. Write an original story of one thousand to two thousand words.

2.     Write one of the following:
2.1          A dramatic sketch taking at least 10 min to perform;
2.2          A short poem in recognized verse form.
2.3          An article or campfire yarn of not less than two hundred words;
2.4          An essay on her favourite hero or heroine.

3.     At the test, write:
3.1          A letter of at least two hundred words describing an incident she has enjoyed.
3.2          An exercise in punctuation given by the tester.

Note: The work submitted under clause 1 and 2 is to be sent to the tester beforehand; it should be neatly written or typed.

South Division Day

Dear Guides,

the annual South Division Day will be held on Saturday, 24 September 2011, from about 8am to 1pm. Tell your phone relay leader if you are not able to make it for the South Division Day and the reason by 5th September. For those who will be able to make it, below are the activities you can participate in. Please tag in the tagbox to tell me which activity you are interested to participate in by 5th September.

ACTIVITY 1 : SEWER EXTRAORDINAIRE

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS – 2 PER UNIT

A Picture paints a thousand words (Guides)

Rules and Regulations (Guides)

1) Time Limit: 30 minutes

2) Participants will be given pieces of cloth which they have to sew together with interesting stitches, design and layout or concept based on the theme of empowering women or what encompasses a modern woman.

3) Participants may bring their own buttons, thread, needles, scissors, ribbons and cloth for the competition.

4) Judging is based on creativity (50%), neatness of stitches (30%) and speed of competition (20%)

ACTIVITY 2 : STEADY HANDS EXTRAORDINAIRE (GUIDES)

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS – 4 PER UNIT

Rules and Regulations (Guides)

1) Time Limit: 15 minutes

2) Attire: Guides’ T-shirts and shorts / track pants

3) Participants are given a stack of poker cards which they have to stack up.

4) Judging is based on height (40%), number of levels / storeys (40%) and speed of competition (20%)

ACTIVITY 3: SUPER QUILT-MAKER

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS – 3 PER UNIT

Rules and Regulations

1) Pieces of cloth would be given to groups of 3 to mend.

2) The group will use the pieces of cloth to form a mini quilt (size of 2 handkerchiefs).

3) Judging is based on creativity (50%) and handiwork (50%)

ACTIVITY 4: MEMORY EXTRAORDINAIRE

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS – 3 PER UNIT

Rules and Regulations

1) Guides play in teams of 3..

2) ONE Guide will be given a “to-do list” to remember within a time frame.

3) She must then share this list with her teammates, and they decide who does what.

4) The fastest and most accurate group wins.

ACTIVITY 5: TELEMATCH

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS – 8 PER TEAM

Teams of 8 will compete against one another in a series of fun activities.

Games include:

“Seven legged worm” (team joins their feet together and walk a certain distance)
“Tug-of-War” (with a slight twist: as teams pull, they will also attempt to pick up “items” on the floor that will help gain more points, think “Super Mario”)
Drunken sailor, and piñata (team sends a representative and performs “drunken sailor” and thereafter, all “drunken sailors” will move ahead to hit common piñata. Other team members are to pick up “items” at the very first instant when the piñata is broken.)

Maximum number of teams for this activity: 6

It will be on a first-come-first-serve basis

ACTIVITY 6: THE HANDICAP CHALLENGE

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS: 5 PER TEAM

Guides will be made to fill the shoes of the less fortunate members of our society through this activity.

Teams of 5 will play roles of different impairments (visually, physically etc) and complete a series of given tasks within the time limit (15 minutes).

Tasks include:

Tying of knots while blindfolded,
passing a message (from a visual impaired to a hearing/speech impaired) etc.
feeding (food/ water)
cleaning up a messy room etc.

This activity aims to highlight Guide Law #7: A Guide has courage and is cheerful in all difficulties, and also to allow Guides to feel for themselves the inconveniences felt by the impaired members of our society.

ACTIVITY 7: SUPER CHEF

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS: 4 PER TEAM

The competition will be divided into two sections:

1) The “Challenge”

Guides are given 30 minutes to create and cook a dish relevant to the theme “Empowering women”. The guides can cook with the ingredients given to them, as long as the theme is relevant in the dish. Once the dishes are cooked, they are all presented to the judges for tasting – presentation, taste and the prevalence of the theme ingredient is considered.

2) Pressure test

The guides are given a dish that they then must create in 45 min. Once the guides have finished cooking, the dishes are taken to the judges to be tasted and criticized.

Total time needed: 1 h 15 min

Judging criteria: Overall appeal (20%), Appearance and Presentation (20%), Execution of recipe (20%), Taste (20%) and Relevance to theme (20%)

ACTIVITY 9 : DANCE TO THE BEAT

NO. OF PARTICIPANTS: 2 TO 5 PER UNIT

Brief:

So you think you can dance? Come take up the challenge and showcase your beautiful and creative moves by dancing to the beat of a mixture of songs!

Judging Criteria:

1. Creativity – 30%

2. Choreography/Synchronisation and Rhythm of Dance – 30%

3. Showmanship and Teamwork – 10%

4. Level of Difficulty – 10%

5. Incorporation of guiding knowledge – 10%

6. Audience Impact – 10%

Format of Competition:

- Teams will be given a maximum of 1½ hour to prepare for the dance item and winning entries will perform prior to the prize presentation ceremony. All teams will prepare for the dance at the hall.

- Music will be provided by the organiser on the day of the competition.

- Teams are highly encouraged to bring along costumes and suitable props.

- The music will be about 3-4 minutes long and is a mixture of popular tunes.

There will be training on the 14th August 2011, Wednesday. Fall in outside Guides room at 3.30 pm sharp in your pt kit. Bring must haves.Sec 1s, bring along your half guides uniform and your boots. For this training, you are expected to finish up one badgework and one testwork.

Below are some suggestions for your badgework:

Conjuring tricks; playing whistle , banjo, harmonica, harp and any other portable instrument; character sketches; stories; songs and chorus; mime.
Note: The standard need not be high as in clause 1, but suitable for a campfire.

Wearing the Guides Uniform

How to wear your uniform:

Sew your patrol emblem four fingers away and align with the first button on the left side of your uniform. Like this:

Instructions to tie the scarf:

Using the method of tying a reef/square knot.

Step 1: Fold scarf a third of the way. Continue to fold/roll long edge over.

Step 2: Place long edge around neck and tie reef knot.

Step 3: Adjust scarf so that it is neat and tidy on both the front and back

If you are still not sure, we can help you to tie tmr,

Pin your world badge four fingers away from the first button, align. Pin it on the right side of your uniform. Your world badge looks like this:

This is how you should wear your belt, whistle on the right, the small thing on the left.

Season your beret like this:

Put your uniform in your hanger and dustcover. Remember to pin your world badge! put ur boots in a shoe bag.

You are expected to memorize the Guides Promise:

Invitation to Bedok South Secondary School's Campfire

Bedok South Secondary have invited us over to their campfire on 10th June, Friday. It will start at 6pm and the venue is at Bedok South Secondary School. The theme for the campfire will be Musical Night and there will be a competition whereby one of you have to dress up the Musical Night Theme. You are expected to report to the venue yourself. I suggest for those who are going, you all can meet up to go to Bedok South Secondary School.

Training on 13th June

Dear Guides,

There will be training on the 13th June 2011, Monday. Fall in outside Guides room at 9am sharp in your pt kit. Bring must haves, half guides uniform and your boots. For those who have not hand up their consent forms, kindly hand it up on 13th June.

For this training, you are expected to complete two testwork or one badgework at home, neatly done and decorated in a booklet form and hand it up at the start of the training when you fall in. Bring along any materials that you need for your testwork or badgework as you will be allocated time to complete another testwork or badgework.

For the training, Sec1s, if you need help on the testwork or badgework, please ask your buddy. Sec 2s, do guide your buddy along.

Below are some of the examples you can use to do for your testwork in a booklet form, neatly done up and decorate:

-Rules of health

-Knowing yourself

-Stress management

-Simple repairs

Repair toilet flushing system

-Giving directions

A new chapter.

Hello Guides! This shall be my last post here on this blog. I shall dedicate it to the new batch of leaders as well as the whole company.

First of all, to the new batch of leaders. I've seen all of you grow since Sec 1 till what you are now: leaders, teachers, NCOs. All of you have grown up so much since then when you first got your trefoils. From blur, little sec1s to mature, responsible NCOs. Time will fly past very fast, and very soon you'll be stepping down and passing down your responsibilities to the new batch of leaders. So cherish whatever time you have with each other and the company.

To the sec2s, lead the juniors well and teach them whatever we have taught you. Stretch your leadership potential since you'll be taking over next year. Respect your new NCOs, and they'll respect you back. Remember the Guide law, and be a sister to other fellow Guides.

Sec1s, learn well under the guidance of your seniors. Establish a sense of initiative and urgency in whatever you do. Start being a leader in whatever way you can, only then will you be fully prepared for your guiding life.

Civil Defence Course 2011

For the training, we wil be focusing on testwork and badges.
For those who have not completed the section on WAGGGS and International, please complete it at home and hand it up at the start of the training. one other testwork/badgework during training.
For those who have completed one of the two sections mentioned above, you are to complete the other one and also prepare another testwork/badgework at home, and hand it up at the start of the training. Girl Guides Centenary Celebrations

Dear Guides,

The centenary celebrations will take place on the 9th April 2011, from 9am to 3pm at Bishan Stadium. The actual celebration will only be from 9am to 12pm, and afterwhich, you can choose whether or not you want to visit the mini carnival which will take place from 12pm to 3pm. During the mini carnival, Donna and Jia Wei will be setting up a Nasi Lemak stall, while Wei Ling, Xiu Min and Kai Xin will be setting up a Mee Siam stall. Do support them if you can. There will also be a lucky draw, whereby all if you are entitled to participate in only if you stay till the end of the carnival. Before the celebrations, you will be given a booklet which will include the day's programme list, information about Girl Guides, and song lyrics. The booklet will also contain answers to a quiz.

For Donna, Jia Wei, Wei Ling, Xiu Min and Kai Xin, you are reminded to report to Guides house on Thursday, 7th April, 5.30pm to prepare for your stalls. It end at around 6.30pm.

On 9th April, fall in outside Guides room at 7.15am sharp in your full Guides uniform. One way transport will be provided. If you have any queries regarding the centenary celebrations, please direct them to your phone relay leader.

Volunteers for ComChest Heartstrings Walk

We have been invited by the official organizer of the Community Chest ComChest Heartstrings Walk 2011 @ Marina Bay Sands to volunteer as crowd marshals. This is a charity event opened to the public where the proceeds of the registration fees go to Community Chest's beneficiaries.

The organiser would need approximately 100 Girl Guides to be volunteers in this event. In return, Community Chest will acknowledge your involvement through distribution of CIP hours.

National Day Parade 2011

Dear Guides,

We have been invited to participate in the National Day Parade 2011, which will be held at the floating platform. This year, the Girl Guides contingent would have only 49 girls. Hence, only 80 Guides will be recruited, 10 from each school. Like previous years, there will be a few internal trainings and selection to select 49 Guides and a few reserves to form the Girl Guides contingent. Guides who wish to be selected for the contingent must attend all the internal trainings. To be selected, you must meet the criteria listed below.

1. Secondary 2 & 3 Guides ONLY (Guides from Secondary 1 & 4 will not be accepted).
2. Singaporeans or PR
3. Minimum height 1.60 m (as set by the organiser, but per past years experience, those who were slightly shorter were also selected.)
4. Have basic knowledge of foot drill
5. Not suffering from the following illnesses – asthma, vertigo, angina, gastritis, allergic to heat and perspiration (rashes), not able to stand in the sun for more than 20 minutes, weak ankles, etc.
6. Guides who are severely overweight (>130%) or severely underweight (<70%) should seek medical approval before participating.
7. Participants MUST be able to attend at least 90% of the training sessions.
8. Guides who need to be away for vacation or camps during the June school holiday are advised not to participate.

Dear Guides

I guess this is the final post I am going to make on this blog. Though I do not know how many of you girls are constantly checking this blog for announcements, I must say that I have enjoyed posting training announcements and many other things on this blog. I do hope that the current sec3 leaders can continue posting on this blog, to keep it alive as much as possible.

Firstly, I would like to thank the sec3s for planning the farewell party for the sec4s yesterday. I was part of the senior farewell party planning committee for two years and I can understand how you have felt during the planning and executing process. It must have been rushy for you girls to plan it in such a short time span, but nevertheless, it was an enjoyable party and i absolutely love all the 12 farewell cards made for us. For the sec3s, you girls have been through a long way from a new sec1 Guide recruit into a leader. Though along the way I have seen and heard some of you wanting to give up this journey and leave altogether, I must say that it is okay to feel so, but now, as you are appointed a leader, you must persevere till the end of your NCO life. No matter how much frustration, hurt or unrecognized you feel through this journey, keep holding on, do not give up, as there are many batches of leaders before your batch that have managed to turn the Guides company into what it is today. I know some of you are feeling stressful with the leadership position you are appointed to, but have faith in our foresight (: It is crucial for you girls to work together and communicate well, put all the unhappiness behind you and move on. Bring the company to greater heights, enjoy the NCO journey (:

To the sec2s, glad to see the strong unity in you girls. Keep up the high spirits and try to bring it into training during games and PT sessions. You girls can have the potential to shine if you want to, so, take up the initiative whenever possible to show your potential. Also, it is crucial now, since the sec3s have taken over the company, that the sec2s must lead and teach the sec1s during trainings( standardisation,footdrills,etc). Do remind them whenever possible about their behaviour, uniform, etc. Other than that, I hope some of you who didnt do well in your academics to use the June holidays wisely to catch up on your studies to prepare for your streaming year and I hope that you can get into the stream you desire (:

To the sec1s, this is the most naughty, chatty and nonsensical (pardon me) batch of sec1s I have ever seen (except for A FEW of you). I still remember bringing you girls to Guides house to purchase the uniform, and from there, i got to know some of you.(though i must say that i have enjoyed that day). I know you girls are finding it hard to get used to Guides trainings (I was like you once), you have to adapt to it and NEVER EVER give up this wonderful and amazing journey. At the end, you will definitely feel yourself changing for the better into someone totally different from what you have started out as. Listen to your seniors' advices and attend trainings regularly. Do not ABCD with the leaders (argue, bargain, complain and demand), respect them and bond together (to excel together). I hope that when I come back next time, I can see you girls growing and maturing. (:

To my ever dearest sec4s,

It has been an amazing journey isn't it? Through the ups and downs of NCO journey, all of us have grown and have knew each other more. I know that most of you have already lost the passion and interest for Guides but I am glad that you still attended Guides trainings regularly. Though I must say that I didn't do a good job in managing the leaders, I am appreciative of your understandings and cooperations. Every camps and trainings will not be made possible if not for your hard work and sweat put in into planning, brainstorming for ideas, executing and doing the clearing up after the activity. After serving the company for two whole years (with Kareen, Shinyin and Siqi), we have grown, learnt and knew more about each other. I thank you all for your commitment and efforts (especially beauty Hengling, thanks for being there to help me, I would not have done it by myself without your tremendous help and advice (: AND mayxian, for the company and commitment all these while, your support has really been appreciated and THANKS for being a good listener). Though yesterday marked the end of our days of serving the company, it doesnt end our friendship, the 12 of us have made it thus far and I hope we can continue with it (:.

Due to Good Friday falling on friday next week unfortunately, we have brought forward our Guide training to tuesday, 30/3/2010.

Fall in outside the heritage gallery on tuesday, in your FULL GUIDES UNIFORM, at 0700.
For afternoon's training, fall in at 1430 in your FULL GUIDES UNIFORM too.
Ensure that all belongings are standardised properly before falling in. Those who are released at 1245/1330, do help out.

For sec1s who are still clueless as to what you must bring you Guides trainings, refer to this list:

Dear SEC1 Guides

Patrol Emblem

Do take note of the following when sewing your patrol emblem onto the Guides blouse.

It is sewn on the LEFT side
Align with the FIRST BUTTON
Measure with your palm, 4 fingers width apart
Sew it there !

Example:

Prior to that, you also have to get a uniform protector and a rotatable hanger.

Rotatable hanger:

(hanger head can be turned)

Uniform protector:

(with zip in the middle. Any colour will do)

Please get the above mentioned things ready and bring it on day camp 1.

This post will give you some rough ideas on what Guiding is all about and what will you benefit from Guiding at the end of the journey.

Seven things about what Girl Guides do...

1) We learn to look after ourselves

The five-point programme, being laid down by our organisation, has a wide range of skills which are practical and closely linked to our daily lives. In Guiding, you will be taught skills like washing and ironing, firelighting, housekeeping, custom etiquette, deportment and conduct in public, public speaking and many other exciting and interesting modules for you to explore !

2) We try new things
Every year, we will try out activities that are new to us so that we are exposed to a greater range of knowledge that are useful to us.
EG: Self-defence course, archery, rock-climbing, fencing, dragon-boating, etc.

3) We make things happen
Ever built a shoerack using just twines and poles? In Girl Guides, you are taught camping skills like tent-pitching and gadget-making. Some of the gadgets that we have constructed are shoerack, flag pole and clothes line. Through gadget-making, we learn useful knots and lashings that can be used in our daily lives (i.e. tying banners, fishing lines) Also, we have campfire (real fire !) during our annual camp.

4) We work with people
In Girl Guides, we plan and execuete our own camps/activities. By planning events, we are given an opportunity to work with people and learn more about ourselves. At the same time, we gain leadership skills by executing activities. This enables us to be more outspoken and boost our confidence level. Be sure that you will be transformed into an outspoken girl from a shy girl after experiencing Guiding!

5) We are part of a small group of friends
As Girl Guides is the only uniformed group that only consists of girls, we are closely-knitted and thats what makes Guides so special and different! We are sisters to one another and care for one another. As we are all girls, our trainings are not as tough and there will always be games sessions carried out during trainings for our girls.

6) We are part of something worldwide
The Worldwide Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts is an organisation that links Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from all over the world. Over the world, there are 10million Guides from 145 countries ! Join us to be part of something big and worldwide!

7) We help to change the world
As a Guide, we have to do a good turn a day. By doing each good turn, we help to spread the act of kindness and smiles to people. Each and every act that we perform of good deed leaves the person and yourself a good feeling deep inside and makes you feel good everyday (:

Dear Guides

These are the test clauses for the Youth Olympic Games Interest Patch.
It is not compulsory for all Guides but you are encouraged to work on it.
It can be researched in groups but it must be presented individually.

Guides

1. Do one of the following:
THIS: (i) As volunteers [(6 hours CIP, not necessarily at a stretch. The CIP may be in the form of hosting someone from the participating National Olympic Committee (NOC). The Guide will log her activities that she does with her guest during the hosting period].
(ii) Understand the meaning of volunteerism and be able to discuss this with her tester.

OR THIS: (i) Develop and imaginative way, such as a song, skit, rap, dance, etc. to tell the history of the Olympic
Games, in ancient and contemporary times, to your unit. Find at least five similarities that exist
between the Olympic Spirit and the values of Girl Guiding.
(ii) Find out about Singapore 2010 (e.g. the three Olympic values that it promotes). Make a presentation of at least ten things about Singapore 2010 that you feel everyone should know at one of your meetings.

3. Fair play, respect for others, self respect, persistence, pursuit of excellence, a balanced body, will and mind, leadership and fitness of skills are all qualities of a successful athlete. Play a YOG team sport that incorporates the above-mentioned qualities and also promotes the message of peace and friendship. Run the sport on equal and fair terms for all athletes.

4. Find out about a traditional dance, form of music or at least two customs/traditions practiced in your school’s twinned NOC/NOC of choice). Demonstrate it at one of your meetings.

5. Carry out an exchange of ideas about Singapore’s many traditions and cultural practices with that of others (e.g. compare and contrast the traditions practiced by Singapore Indians with the Indians living in North or South India). Share your findings with your unit.

What? : Interpatrol Quiz (BP Quest)
When? : 25 Nov 2009, 0900
Why? : Our main purpose is to improve the guiding knowledge within the guides, strengthen bonds within patrols. Another aim is to prepare the current sec2s for the BP Quest next year, which takes place at the end of 2010. They will be competing among guides from the other companys.
Who? : All the guides are involved. Please work hard for your patrols! Me and Kareen will be setting the questions.
Where? : AMKSS
How? : Happens in two rounds. First round is an individual test, 30 MCQs within 30 Mins. Second round takes place within a patrol. We will be setting questions into powerpoint slides and the fastest patrol to ring the bell will get the chance to answer. Questions that require practical ways to answer (EG: First aid, gadgets) will be given too. A total of 10 questions will be asked (not inclusive of 2 bonus questions).
Questions will be taken out from the guides handbook (except the bonus questions)

Proficiency badges
For sec1s, the below list are some of the badges that you can work on.

1) Thrift badge
1.1 Have a savings account of at least 3months' standing and show that she has added to it regularly from her savings or pocket money

1.2 Bring a certificate from her parents stating that she is not wasteful in the home and is keeping her belongings in good condition

1.3 Bring to the test an article that proves that she is thrifty: eg, a mended blouse or a repaired personal possession or toy.

1.4 Plan and show how she has spent her pocket money for a week

1.5 Answer questions on the real meaning of thrift and how she is able to put thrift into practice within her guide unit

(For 1.1, you can photocopy from your bankbook a section of a recent deposit that you made into a bank)

2) Toymaker
Pass two of the following:
2.1 Make two soft toys to demonstrate your ability to sew decorative stitches. The toy could be animal-shaped or rag dolls. The use of fabric paints or embroidery for the face is acceptable. Cut-out patterns may be used

2.2 Create a toy vehicle or a toddle with movable wheels from wood, cork or other material

2.3 Create a musical chime for a child using recycled materials

2.4 Dress a doll, the clothes to be removable and similar to those of a baby or toddler. The doll may be the rag doll made for the test

2.5 Make a scrapbook to include one page of original illustrations or an original story
EG: A fairy story, nature story, heroic story, etc

2.6 Make a model farmyard or dollhouse, using a combination of cardboard, softboard, plywood and other hobbycraft materials

3) Friends to animals
3.1 Own or Co-own an animal or bird

Make a scrapbook or logbook, include the following pointers in it.
3.2 Know how to:
A. Feed the animals
B. Keep it healthy
C. Give medicine
D. Obtain advice on sick animals from a vet
E. Clean up the cage / habitat of the animal

3.3 Explain the effects that all of the following have on your pet:
A. Over feeding
B. Lack of discipline in training
C. Unsuitable living conditions
D. Insufficient care in grooming

3.4 Prepare a short essay on the
A. Natural history of 2 domestic animals (other than the animal which you own)

B. Their habitats

C. Usefulness to mankind

4) Entertainer
4.1 Perform two of the following activities for at least 3 mins.
A. Dancing
B. Singing
C. Playing a musical instrument
D. Poem recitation
*It must be of a standard suitable for a public performance
EG: Interclass dance or drama, NOMAD, story telling etc

Please prepare for at least one badge for next training.
Also, please be reminded that you still have your washing testwork to memorise.
Failure to comply to it will result in action taken by NCOs.

The long awaited day is here ~
Tmr is our big day. Having trained so hard and going through so many rounds of rehearsals, i hope that we will be able to have a full squad of 24 tmr.

Details for tmr:
Reporting time: 1215 SHARP(For those who need help with tying of hair, please report at 1130.)
Reporting attire: Full Guides Uniform
Reporting venue: OUTSIDE GG ROOM AT SCHL (transport will be provided to YCK,hopefully)

There will be uniform inspection tmr, so, please ensure that your uniform is up to standard.

For guides with long hair, tie your hair with two plaits.

For guides with shoulder-length hair which can be tied into ponytail but not into plaits, tie your hair like the traditional NDP hairstyle. The only difference is that the first layer is tied as plaits, then the second layer is tied together with the plaits, into a ponytail. Okay, if you dun understand, come find us at 1130 tmr.

For guides with short hair that cannot be tied at all, leave it as it was.

If you have any valid reasons that you would be late tmr, please inform your relay leaders ASAP.

For weiling and eileen, do not wear guides uniform to school. You will change into it when you report.

From 1500-1600, we will be having ROD and enrolment ceremonies rehearsals. At about 1600 or earlier, the actual ROD & enrolment ceremonies will commence.
After that, we will proceed to YCK stadium. One way transport will be provided.
Please note that it will end prolly around 2030.

Reporting attire: Any school top, guides skirt, seasoned beret on left pocket, ODT on right pocket, boots and 4-finger socks.

You are allowed to wear your half guide u to school for the whole day, unless you are having PE, then you have to change out of it and put your skirt in the uniform protector.
Please fill up your bottle when reporting & take temp.
Anyone reporting late for training or will be absent, please inform the leaders.

Dear all guides,

After taking a week long break (thou it passed in the blink of an eye), the cycle of mon, wed and friday NDP trainings will resume as per normal from 8 july 2009 (wed) onwards.

Details of NDP training on 8July:
Reporting time: 1500
Reporting venue: Canteen area beside stall 8.
Reporting attire:

Light blue polo tshirt
Guides Skirt with Belt, whistle, ETC
Beret (seasoned) on left pocket of guides skirt
White shoes / boots
4-finger socks

Please put your skirt in the uniform protector and hanger (!). You need not bring must haves.

Reminder to all guides: REMEMBER YOUR 1.5L GREEN SPRITE BOTTLES and take temperature before reporting

Enjoy the 3-day long weekends and drink lotsa PRECIOUS WATER.

Kiwi is for polishing boots and brasso is for polishing your trefoil AKA enrolment badge (the one pinned on your scarf)

Thank you for all the hard work you put in our NDP trainings. You guys are the best! Hang in there and do us proud!

You can look forward to an outing after NDP. A lot of you are interested in archery so I will be arranging for an archery session for you. Any objections?

Dear Guides,

This coming saturday, 27June 2009 is the GirlGuides Carnival 2009.
Our booth will be at LVL2 (Hall), stall number 83.

Reporting time: 7.45am
Reporting Venue: Bishan MRT (Control Station)
Reporting Attire: Light blue Polo T-shirt, guides skirt and white shoes.

I had already sent to your emails the shift allocation.
We will start preparing the stall (decorating, setting up, etc) from 8 to 10.
All guides are supposed to stay throughout the whole carnival unless you have a valid reason.
At 1600, we will start to clear up the place and do a stock check.
